Laser hair removal is a popular choice for those who want long-term freedom from unwanted hair. However, some of the common beliefs about it are not accurate. In this article we look at the most frequent myths in plain language and explain how many sessions are needed and why the session schedule matters.

Is a Permanent Result Possible in a Single Session?

The most common myth is that laser hair removal eliminates all hair in one session. The laser only targets hair follicles in the active growth (anagen) phase. Since not all hairs are in this phase at the same time, results are only achieved through several sessions repeated at specific intervals.

Other frequently encountered misconceptions:

  • “Laser hair removal is completely permanent.” The method aims for a permanent reduction in hair; maintenance sessions may be needed over time depending on the person.
  • “The same result is achieved on every skin and hair type.” Results vary from person to person based on factors such as skin tone and hair colour and thickness.
  • “It can never be done in summer.” Care is needed on freshly tanned skin, but treatment can be planned with proper protection and a medical assessment.
  • “The procedure is unbearably painful.” With modern devices that have cooling systems, the sensation is usually a mild tingling.

Because laser hair removal is a sun-sensitive procedure, especially when planning treatment in the summer months it is helpful to also consider the advice in our pre-summer skin preparation and sun protection guide.

Laser hair removal aims for a permanent reduction of hair. It is more realistic to set the expectation as a clear, lasting thinning rather than “zero hair”.
How Many Sessions Are Needed and What Should the Intervals Be?

The number of sessions varies according to the area, hair structure and skin characteristics. In general, more than one session is required for a clear result, and sessions are planned at specific intervals to match the hair cycle. Fast-cycling areas such as the face may need different intervals than areas like the legs, so the plan is always personalised.

What to Pay Attention to Before and After a Session
  • Do not remove hair with wax or tweezers between sessions; the root must stay in place. Shaving is the only preferred method.
  • Before and after the procedure, avoid the sun and tanning beds and use a high-factor sunscreen.
  • For a few days after a session, avoiding hot showers, saunas and intense exercise reduces temporary skin sensitivity.
  • Pause active products such as peels and retinol for a few days around the procedure.

Short-lived redness may appear after the procedure. The logic of skincare after laser procedures is broadly similar; our post-laser care and recovery article can also offer guidance on this.
